"I am so glad that I came to the Haven because I have learned and healed so much here"
Todd was abandoned by his biological parents at an early age. He was only a toddler when he was placed in foster care, and he still remembers the trauma of those early days. He was placed with many families, but when he was six years old, he was adopted by a couple that was over the moon to bring hime into their home.
The rest of Todd's childhood he remembers as being idyllic, until his adoptive dad became suddenly ill and passed away within days. It was a big loss for Todd as he idolized the man he called daddy.
Todd entered his teen years without the father figure he desperately needed. His mother loved him but over compensated for the things he had been through and tended to be very permissive. Todd began drinking with his older friends before he left middle school, and drugs followed later in high school. By the time he graduated, he was drinking and using cocaine regularly.
For almost 10 years, Todd was able to control his drinking and drug use. He managed to keep a job, and performed well enough to get several promotions, and was earning a good wage.
The drug use was increasing over time, and gradually it began to consume most of his income. Todd knew he had a problem but could not control his drug use. His desperation increased, which led to many bad decisions.
Todd wrote bad checks to cover his bills and to support his addiction. He began to steal checks from others to do the same. It wasn't long before he was arrested and charged with possession, felony theft, and forgery. He was incarcerated for several years and then released to a halfway house. When he timed out there, one of the administrators called the Haven of Rest and asked if Todd could stay here.
Todd entered the Haven Men's Shelter and soon found work. Having been incarcerated, he was detoxed from cocaine and alcohol, so his work performance was good, and he was faithful to attend chapel and follow the rules. After 45 days, he entered the Lighthouse Program.
Todd used his finances wisely. He paid off the fines related to his theft and forgery charges much sooner than required and has remained sober since getting out of jail. He has shown no signs of going back to his old ways. He is also helping others in their struggle with substance misuse and has become a source of encouragement to everyone at the Haven.
While Todd was doing well in so many ways, there was one area of his life that hadn't changed, he had not accepted Jesus as his Savior. Thankfully, after nearly a year in the Lighthouse program, that changed. After hearing a message about how God orchestrates all of our steps, Todd realized how God's hand had been on his life and delivered him from drugs and alcohol. He surrendered to Christ and was baptized. He is being discipled and living a more abundant life that is obvious to all that are around him.
Todd recently made this statement: "I missed out on having a dad through a crucial time in my life. Because of that, I lost many years to drugs, alcohol, and prison. Those were dark days. Now, I know that I have a Heavenly Father and I am learning to use the bad experiences of my life to help others. I am so glad that I came to the Haven because I have learned and healed so much here. I feel like I have a future and because of Jesus, I have more peace in my life than I have ever know."
