Wendy credits the Haven for her new outlook on life, stating "I've never been happier"
After an accident at work, Wendy saw a doctor for pain medication due to injuries. The doctor prescribed Lortab (hydrocodone) and Wendy quickly found herself addicted to the medication. When the doctor realized the severity of the issue, Wendy was dropped as a patient. Still addicted to pain medication, Wendy turned to the streets for her "fix". Once it became too difficult to buy pills off the street, Suboxone became the next step for Wendy. "It was the worst thing I could've and I have ever done." she stated.
Although the pills and Suboxone helped with Wendy's physical pain, her mental health was suffering. Wendy was struggling tremendously with depression and anxiety due to a difficult relationship with her son and other family. In the summer of 2022, Wendy found herself in a difficult living situation. Her son's girlfriend became physically abusive toward Wendy. Numerous fights ensued and after a particularly violent one, Wendy made the choice to stay in a hotel. When she and other family could no longer afford hotel stays, she found herself homeless for the first time in her life.
Due to this current life circumstance, Wendy's mental health was at its worst. Wendy made the choice to seek mental health assistance and made her way to a local hospital. From the hospital she entered a psychiatric facility in Johnson City, TN. The care Wendy received didn't take effect. After a few weeks and another hospital visit later, Wendy entered a psychiatric facility in Kingsport, TN. Wendy found this treatment helpful and found herself functioning and able to live with her son and his girlfriend.
After several weeks, the violence started again. This time, the violence was much more severe. Wendy describes this violence with tears in her eyes. Wendy states that blood was drawn during this fight and to this day exhibits scars on her forearm. Her son's girlfriend placed an eviction order against Wendy and for the second time in her life, she found herself homeless. The stress endured caused Wendy's mental health to plummet. Again, Wendy sought mental health assistance. This time, Wendy was sent to a psychiatric facility in Bristol, VA. There, Wendy learned of the Haven and entered after several weeks of treatment.
During her first stay at the Haven, Wendy still found herself struggling. She struggled with her mental health and the structure of the Haven. Still needing psychiatric treatment, Wendy felt it best to re-enter the facility. After a few more weeks, Wendy returned to the Haven ready to start fresh. Wendy has since gained employment at a local restaurant working 40 plus hours a week and is planning to move out and take care of her elderly mother. Wendy credits the Haven for her new outlook on life, stating "I've never been happier."
